Lead-acid batteries to backup nuclear on US submarines

Lead-acid batteries from Exide Technologies and EnerSys Energy Products are to provide emergency backup power for nuclear reactors on board US Navy submarines.


Under contracts issued by the US Department of Defense(DoD), the companies will supply valve regulated lead-acid (VRLA) batteries as backup emergency power fornuclear reactors on board strategic and fast attack nuclear submarines.


The DoD said it hadawarded Exide and EnerSys two firm-fixed-price, indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity contracts. The contracts cover a five-year ordering period and an aggregate ceiling of $75millionfor submarine VRLAbattery cells, packaging, storage, trays, tray lid covers and battery cell boosting.
