New Delhi hits the roof over diesel gensets in safety drive

May 7, 2018

Authorities in New Delhi are reportedly behind moves to clear the city’s rooftops of diesel gensets as part of a buildings safety drive.

New Delhi Municipal Council wants the gensets removed because “they have been identified as the main cause of building collapse” in a survey conducted last year, the English-language daily DNA reported.

The gensets and “associated equipment”… threaten the structural stability of the British-era buildings, which cannot bear such heavy loads”, DNA quoted one council officer as saying.

Last November, India temporarily banned the use of diesel gensets for non-essential services in New Delhi in a bid to improve air quality with the onset of winter.
