ABB’s PowerStore microgrid boosts mining in Western Australia

April 17, 2018

Swiss engineeringcompany ABB has supplied backup power systems to support mining operations in Western Australia’s Pilbara region.

ABB’s containerised plug-and-play PowerStore microgrid solution (pictured), featuring a combined 30MW lithium-ion battery storage system, has been installed at Australian electricity retailer Alinta Energy’s 178MW gas-fired Newman Power Station— which supplies power to remote mining operations in the Pilbara region.

ABB said PowerStore will provide instant power supply to cover the time it takes to startup a new gas turbine in the event of a loss of power. The ABB system will integrate five 6MW PowerStore lithium systems with the power station’s existing gas turbines, providing a ‘spinning reserve’.

Last January, ABB was selected by Keppel Infrastructure subsidiary, Keppel Seghers, to supply complete electrical, instrumentation and automation and control systems for Singapore’s fourth desalination facility— the Keppel Marina East Desalination Plant.
