Germany-based UPS specialist Piller Group has been selected to provide backup power systems to Lfoundry— a leading Italian manufacturer of microelectronic silicon semiconductor products.
Piller is to safeguard power supplied to Lfoundry’s manufacturing site in Avezzano, Central Italy (pictured), with three of its UNIBLOCK UBT+ units with 2,250 kW in parallel mode. Piller said the systems incorporate a 21MJ POWERBRIDGE kinetic energy storage, “with rotary stabilisers utilising robust synchronous generators to ensure high quality power, independent of the mains supply”.
Lfoundry is part of China’s Shanghai-based Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation, SMIC. LFoundry’s operations and maintenance manager Claudio Piccolini said the investment with Piller “allows us to guarantee a stable voltage on the internal network, avoiding unexpected stops of production machinery”.
“Moreover, the presence of the Piller system allows us to operate the power plant without a hot backup engine, reducing the cost of electricity and general operating costs,” Piccolini said.
Business unit director at Piller Italia, Lanfranco Pedrotti, said: “The versatility of our UNIBLOCK solution is perfectly suited to industrial applications such as semiconductor production. The option of using energy storage during island operation alongside cogeneration is a solution which only Piller can provide.”
Piller is a division of the UK engineering and industrial group Langley Holdings. In November 2016 the group’s US subsidiary, Piller Power Systems, acquired the assets and business of US kinetic energy storage specialist Active Power.
